(a) Find .
Show answerHide answer
Answer
Why
is in the third quadrant with reference angle . The principal argument lies in , so it is .
(b) Describe the region .
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The closed disc with centre and radius (solid boundary).
Why
is the distance from , and “” includes the circle itself.
(c) A circle has centre and radius . A tangent from touches it at . Find , where is on the positive real axis.
Show answerHide answer
Answer
Why
The radius to is perpendicular to the tangent, so in the right-angled triangle and . This is used again in Example 4.
(d) Write exactly.
Show answerHide answer
Answer
Why
From the -- triangle, .
Argument fixes a direction
Key idea
Rays: The vector from to makes the angle with the positive real direction.
The locus is a ray starting at . The point itself is excluded (open circle), because is undefined.
Example 1 · Rays
Sketch each locus.
(a)
Show answerHide answer
Answer
A ray from at angle to the positive real axis, with an open circle at .
Why
means with . is excluded.
(b)
Show answerHide answer
Answer
A ray from at angle (parallel to the ray in (a)), with an open circle at .
Why
Common errors: drawing a full line, or starting the ray at instead of at .

Example 2 · More rays
Sketch each locus.
(a)
Show answerHide answer
Answer
A ray from going up and to the left at , with an open circle at .
Why
, so the ray starts at .
(b)
Show answerHide answer
Answer
Two rays on the line : one starting at going down-right, and one starting at going up-left. Both endpoints are excluded, and the segment between them is not part of the locus.
Why
The directions from and from to are equal. This happens only on the line through the two points, and only when is outside the interval between them (inside it the two directions are opposite).

Example 3 · Regions
Sketch each region.
(a)
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The annulus between the circles of radius and about , both boundaries solid.
Why
is outside or on the unit circle and is inside or on the circle of radius 3.
(b)
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The sector between the rays at and from , rays solid, with an open circle at .
Why
is excluded because is undefined.

HSC practice · Regions
Adapted from 2022 HSC Q12 marksSketch the region where and .
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The region to the right of the dashed line and below the dashed ray (the ray from at ). The corner is not included.
Why
Points with already have , so only the upper bound matters. The two boundaries meet at .
Show diagramHide diagram
Adapted from 2024 HSC Q11(f)4 marksSketch the region where and .
Show answerHide answer
Answer
Inside the dashed circle of radius about , in the quarter-plane , with corner at . The two straight edges (from ) are solid, and the point itself is excluded (open circle).
Why
says that lies in the first quadrant, including its two axes but not the origin. The edges end where they meet the circle, at and . Marks are usually for the dashed circle, the quarter-plane from , the open point at and the correct shading.

Example 4 · Greatest and least values
Exam practice5 marks represents , where . (i) Sketch the locus. (ii) Find the greatest and least values of and of . (iii) and are tangents to the locus. Write and in polar form.
Show answerHide answer
Answer
(i) Circle with centre and radius . (ii) and . (iii) and .
Why
(ii) Along the real axis the nearest and farthest points are and . A tangent from is perpendicular to the radius, so in the right-angled triangle and . (iii) The tangent length is . As a check, .

Example 5 · A region and its extremes
Example 5
Sketch the region where and . Find the greatest value of in the region and the point where it occurs.
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The greatest value is , at .
Why
The circle with centre and radius passes through and meets the real axis at and . The diagonal passes through the centre, so the region is the half-disc below minus the small segment below the real axis. It is bounded by the chord from to on the real axis, the arc from to , and the diameter from back to . is excluded because is undefined. The farthest point from is the other end of the diameter through , , which lies on (included).

Extension · Arcs
Key idea
Angle subtended by a fixed intervalmeans the interval subtends a constant angle at .
So lies on an arc of a circle (angles in the same segment are equal), and and are excluded. This is not a named syllabus locus, but it follows from “using circle geometry theorems where necessary”.
Example 6
ExtensionSketch the locus given by , and find the centre and radius of the circle.
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The major arc, above the real axis, of the circle with centre and radius , with excluded.
Why
is the angle at in the triangle with vertices , and . The chord of length subtends at the circumference, so and . The centre is on the imaginary axis at height . The circle is with . (Algebraically, gives the same circle.)

Spot the error · Rays and regions
Each statement is wrong. Find the error and correct it.
(a) is the line .
Show answerHide answer
Answer
It is only the ray , , with excluded.
Why
A fixed argument gives a ray, not a full line. is undefined, so is an open circle.
(b) is a ray starting at .
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The ray starts at : it is the vertical ray , , with the point excluded.
Why
, so the ray starts at , not at .
(c) In both circles are dashed.
Show answerHide answer
Answer
Both circles are solid.
Why
“” includes the boundary, so both circles are part of the region.
(d) The region includes the origin.
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The origin is excluded (open circle).
Why
is undefined, so cannot satisfy the condition.
Exit ticket
1. Sketch the region and .
Show answerHide answer
Answer
The part of the closed disc with centre and radius on or above the solid line (a segment of the disc).
Why
The line cuts the circle where , that is .
2. Find the least value of if .
Show answerHide answer
Answer
, at .
Why
The locus is the ray from with points , . Then is least at . (This is the foot of the perpendicular from to the line, and it lies on the ray.)
